Shapiro admits that Playmakers’ and Tilt’s inclusion of ESPN logos and personalities was “very orchestrated.” “We felt we were the everyday fan’s news resource for sports and so if you’re going to have this fictional world, there’s no way they would be going about their day-to-day without some element of ESPN being part of their life.”40 Beyond endorsing ESPN’s importance, these brand placements exclude competing organizations. They create settings where ESPN is not simply the most powerful sports media outlet but the only one worth mentioning. In doing so, they suggest that ESPN’s broader effort to assert and maintain its authority extends into fictional worlds.
