Angela Basset plays an ESPN reporter in the film Mr. 3000 (2004). ESPN nurtures product placements as long as they do not compromise its brand.
Shapiro admits that Playmakersâ and Tiltâs inclusion of ESPN logos and personalities was âvery orchestrated.â âWe felt we were the everyday fanâs news resource for sports and so if youâre going to have this fictional world, thereâs no way they would be going about their day-to-day without some element of ESPN being part of their life.â40 Beyond endorsing ESPNâs importance, these brand placements exclude competing organizations. They create settings where ESPN is not simply the most powerful sports media outlet but the only one worth mentioning. In doing so, they suggest that ESPNâs broader effort to assert and maintain its authority extends into fictional worlds.
